Cardiologists take centre stage
Derriford Hospital
The patients underwent angioplasty
A team of cardiologists from Plymouth broadcast a live heart operations to a conference in Pakistan on Saturday.

The group from Derriford hospital shared their expertise in angioplasty which is now a common alternative to heart bypass operations.

Thousands of health workers from across the world attended the conference in Islamabad.

They watched the operations at Derriford via satellite and four cameras in two laboratories.

First time

The cardiologists involved were Dr Guy Haywood, Dr Joe Motwani, Dr Ian Cox and Dr David Sarkar.

Dr Christopher Burrell and one of the catheter laboratory sisters, Deborah Waite, were in Pakistan to explain what is happening and answer questions.

It is thought to be the first time such a broadcast has been attempted in the South West.

The patients underwent angioplasty which involves inflating the clotted artery and putting in a wire mesh tube to hold it open.

Surgeons now carry out five times as many angioplasty operations as heart bypasses; because it is less intrusive and recovery times are much faster.
