Carsharedevon says most Devonians are aware of the service
Drivers are being urged to join a car share website by Devon County Council.

The council site has 2,300 people registered for car sharing and organisers say nearly 80% of people in Devon are now aware of it.

But there are a 264,672 commuters in the county, aged 16-74, according to the 2001 census and only 31,582 share a car to and from work.

The figures were revealed on National Lift Share Day when drivers were being encouraged to fill empty car seats.

Lesley Smith, the administrator for the site, said: "We have got a long way to go, but people are quite aware of the service.

"We do a citizens' survey in Devon where we ask local people what they think of local services and in December 79% were aware of carsharedevon which is really good.

"What we have to do now is to persuade people who are aware of it to give it a go."
