About 1,500 fish died after a mystery pollutant entered a stream in Devon, says the Environment Agency (EA).

The EA was alerted late on Sunday after two people walking on the riverbank at Shobrooke Lake stream reported seeing dozens of dead and dying fish.

Fish in a 1.9 mile (3km) of a stream near Crediton have been "virtually wiped out".

EA officers have been on site since early on Monday, but have not been able find clear evidence of pollution.

Information appeal

They are looking for clues and carrying out fish and biological surveys.

"It is all a bit of a mystery," said Sean McKay from the EA.

"So far we haven't been able to find any trace of a pollutant.

"We would like to hear from anyone who has noticed anything unusual about the stream over the past week or has information that could help us."

The affected fish were mostly minnows, bullhead and lamprey. But it also included a number of other fish species, including stone loach and eels and the deaths of about 100 young brown trout.
