Power cuts as storms hit county
Lightning generic
Two homes in Plymouth were hit by lightning
Up to 10,000 homes across Devon have been left without power following overnight storms.

Most of the properties affected are in the mid and east Devon area, especially around Tiverton and a flood watch is in force for all rivers and watercourses.

About 1,200 homes in the wider Plymouth area also suffered power cuts.

Western Power Distribution said it was prepared and had crews out overnight but they were unable to work in the storms because it was too dangerous.

'Worst over'

Firefighters were called to two homes in Plymouth which caught light after apparently being hit by lightning.

They attended a house in Peverell at 0420 BST and another in St Budeaux with a roof fire. No one was injured.

A flood watch is in force for all rivers and watercourses in mid and east Devon following heavy overnight showers.

The Environment Agency is warning people some areas could be at risk of localised flooding, in particular Exeter, Exford, Tiverton, Honiton and Axminster.

BBC senior broadcast meteorologist David Braine said: "The worst is over, although there is still risk for the next few hours of another storm in parts of Somerset and Dorset."
