Work has started on a major flood defence scheme at Lympstone on the south Devon coast.
The 900,000 scheme will protect more than 100 properties at risk from tidal flooding on the River Exe.
A series of flood gates operated by local volunteers are being installed and a groyne will be reinforced to help deflect waves.
The scheme by the Environment Agency and Mowlem Engineering is due for completion this autumn.
