Town is fighting bank close plans
Buckfastleigh street
Town officials say the close may badly hit the area
Residents in a town in Devon say they will fight plans to close its last remaining bank.

Lloyds TSB said it had taken the "regrettable decision" to close the branch at Buckfastleigh because fewer and fewer people were using it.

Residents said when Lloyds TSB announced plans to reduce opening times to just three days a week, they were promised that the bank would not close.

Lloyds TSB said that accounts would be transferred to its Ashburton branch.

Residents said they were not happy with the decision and would campaign to save the bank.

Town Mayor Donald Joint said: "There are times when the big companies have to got to think about the smaller people, and I believe this is one of those times.

"To my mind, if they do close this bank it will be one more nail in the town of Buckfastleigh."

The bank said an increase in internet and telephone banking had contributed to fewer people using the branch.

It added that the village post office less than 300ft (100m) away from the branch would be able to help with many services, including cash withdrawals, deposits and balance enquiries.
