Weather changes can exacerbate lung conditions
A Met Office project has been helping people in Devon who suffer from serious breathing difficulties.

Weather forecasts used by doctors at the Chilcote Surgery in Torquay have resulted in an 82% cut in hospital admissions for chest patients.

Patients received special packs which included room thermometers, and a guide to avoid their symptoms worsening.

The Met Office provided detailed twice weekly weather briefings, enabling patients to take early action.

Lung problems such as emphysema, bronchitis and asthma are all affected by changes in the weather, with severe cold or heat likely to exacerbate the symptoms.

The Chilcote Surgery, which has been working with the Met Office since September 2004, said hospital admissions for its group of patients has dropped by 82%.
