Yard workers in fourth strike day

Appledore Shipyard workers: Pic Ray Smith
Unions have been told the yard could lose a major contract

A fourth day of strike action is taking place at Appledore shipyard in north Devon in a dispute over pay.

Staff at the yard, which is owned by Babcock Marine, say they are not paid as much as workers in the firm's other UK yards.

Babcock has disputed their claim and has warned that workers risk losing a vital contract to build the hulls for two new aircraft carriers.

Management said the longer action went on, the more it could hit work there.

The work on the Royal Navy's new 3.8bn carrier programme will at the very least secure about 200 jobs at the Appledore yard, which went into receivership in 2003.
