A Royal Marine from Plymouth who was badly injured in Afghanistan and a girl whose father served in Iraq have got Devon's poppy appeal under way.

Mark Ormrod lost both legs and an arm when he was caught in an explosion in 2007. Eight-year-old Lydia Cross lost her legs to meningitis in 2003.

The appeal was launched at Exeter City's St James Park at 1545 BST.

The Royal British Legion hopes to equal last year's record poppy appeal in Devon which raised £835,000.

A cadet from each of the three armed services abseiled from the roof of a stand and raced to deliver a large poppy to the Royal Marine, Lydia and the Lord Mayor of Exeter who were in the centre of the pitch.

The appeal took place at half-time during Exeter City's match against Wycombe Wanderers.
