Patients are being prescribed books instead of pills as part of a new scheme in Dorset.
People who visit their GP, counsellor or psychologist in Poole are being recommended books which they can then borrow from any library in the town.
The "books on prescription" scheme is used throughout the UK for patients with mental health problems, and the book lists are designed to help them.
Borrowers do not have to be existing members of the library service.
The books cover topics such as bereavement, eating disorders and depression.
A spokesman said the service would help " people with mild to moderate psychological problems to self-help at home."
