Railway celebrates 120th birthday
First train from Swanage 20 May 1885
The first train from Swanage set off on 20 May 1885
A rare type of steam engine will return to Dorset as part of a railway line's 120th anniversary celebrations.

On 20 May, 1885, the first steam train ran from Swanage to Wareham and Corfe Castle - replacing the horse as the main transport in the area.

To celebrate the event a Victorian opening ceremony will be re-enacted at Swanage Railway station.

The Beattie Well Tank class steam engine, the type used 120 years ago, will return for the special event.

Nick Brown, Swanage Railway general manager, said: "The Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the Swanage 120 celebrations will see the Victorian Beattie Well Tank haul special trains between Swanage and Norden.

"We will also be running a series of Victorian themed trains."

The celebrations will also include a model railway exhibition in Swanage.
