A 3.3m lottery bid to fund a revamp of the eastern "gateway" to the Jurassic Coast has been submitted by council bosses in Dorset.
The county council has applied for 3.3m from the Heritage Lottery Fund to make improvements to Durlston Country Park, near Swanage.
It hopes to restore the park's original Victorian landscape and features.
Plans include a complete renovation of the historic Durlston Castle to turn it into a new visitor centre.
2009 opening
The castle, completed in 1887, was intended as the crowning glory of the park but has fallen into disrepair and most of it is now closed to the public.
The restored castle would host a cafe, an interpretation area for the public and function room facilities, while the existing visitor centre would be converted into a learning centre.
Hilary Cox, from Dorset County Council, said: "We want to ensure the site retains its integral beauty and tranquillity, while enhancing the run-down areas in and around the castle."
A decision on the bid is expected at the end of October.
If successful, the refurbished castle could be opened to the public by October, 2009.
