Essex County Council has won an award for saving taxpayers £500,000 a year through simple steps such as sending invoices by e-mail.
The shared services department has been awarded a Government Business Award for its Purchase to Pay scheme.
Since April 2007 the council has dealt with suppliers by using e-mails.
A council spokeswoman said: "Since this system was launched... the council is on target to save £2.5m, averaging £500,000 per year."
