Elderly woman catches swine flu

An elderly woman has tested positive for swine flu, bringing the number of cases in Essex to three.

A spokeswoman for NHS South West Essex said the woman is in her 70s and lives in the Basildon area.

The trust said she had not travelled abroad but had been in close contact with a man in another part of the county who had already tested positive.

Other cases in Essex have been confirmed in the Clacton and North Weald areas.

Meanwhile, a child from Canvey Island is being treated for suspected swine flu.

'Responding well'

Dr Katherine Gronqvist, director of public health at NHS South West Essex, said: "I can confirm that a woman in her 70s, who lives in the Basildon area, has tested positive for swine flu.

"Her symptoms are mild and she is responding well to anti-virals at home."

In North Weald, a man in his 30s was being treated for swine flu.

He became Essex's second confirmed case after a Clacton man, who had recently returned from Mexico, became the first person in the East of England to be diagnosed with the virus.

On Canvey Island, the Year Eight pupil at Castle View School was also receiving treatment for a suspected case.

Other pupils at the school were being given anti-viral drugs.

The total number of UK cases stands at 55.
