Bird centre shuts for bridge work

The Patch Bridge at Slimbridge
The old bridge has to be replaced after falling into disrepair

The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust has closed its centre at Slimbridge in Gloucestershire for two days to allow a bridge to be replaced.

A temporary bailey bridge was installed over the Sharpness Canal after the original bridge fell into disrepair.

The centre will be inaccessible during the work, as the bridge forms part of the main route to the site.

During the work, boats will be given passage along the canal, including a 1920s tall ship docked at Gloucester.

Operations manager Veronica Morriss said: "We are very pleased to see the great progress which is being made in the project to renew the Patch Bridge and British Waterways and Gloucestershire County Council have been extremely helpful in trying to alleviate problems for us at this time.

"Unfortunately, key engineering works does mean that our visitors are not able to get to us on the 16th and 17th of March and then finally for one last day on the 3rd of April.

"We hope it won't inconvenience people too much as the end result is that we will have a much improved canal bridge with a pedestrian walkway which will allow everyone to get to us without delay."
