Planners back 8m pier makeover
Boscombe Pier
The council is set to approve 8m plans to redevelop the pier
Plans for an 8m makeover of a seaside resort pier and its surrounds are to be considered by planners on Monday.

The revamp of Boscombe Pier in Bournemouth, Dorset, could see an artificial surf reef created.

The borough council hopes to sell a car park in Honeycombe Chine to Barratt Homes for a 169-flat development to fund the project.

Other improvements include a shorter pier with a new entrance housing restaurants and family attractions.

'Much-needed regeneration

Mark Smith, the borough council's head of seafront services, said: "After 50 years of failed schemes, investment in and regeneration of Boscombe's seafront are much-needed.

"Our extensive consultation into the leisure proposals showed widespread support for the scheme from the people of Boscombe and residents of Bournemouth as a whole."

Officers are recommending that the authority's planning board approves the scheme on Monday ahead of a meeting of the full council on Tuesday.

But some residents living nearby say they want more information on the scheme before any land is sold off.
