Waste plant could cause 'traffic chaos'
Communities in Herefordshire, campaigning against a proposed waste treatment plant, have used a fleet of lorries to demonstrate the traffic chaos which they say could be caused if the plan goes ahead.

The plant, planned for an industrial estate near Madley, would be capable of treating and recycling the county's household waste.

But campaigners said it would lead to a huge increase in heavy traffic on the surrounding minor roads.

Opponents of the plant are hoping photographs of Saturday's event will urge the council to refuse planning permission.

Backed plans

Last year a bid to develop a waste incinerator in neighbouring Worcestershire failed.

But the problem remains of how to deal with the estimated 300,000 tonnes of rubbish produced in the two counties each year.

The plans have been put forward by Estech Europe Ltd, based in Aldridge, West Midlands.

Council environmental officers and the waste collection contractor Severn Waste have backed the plans.

A planning decision is expected early next year.
