The care home will close in the near future after it was flooded in summer 2007.

A care home which was damaged in the summer floods of 2007 is to close despite a lengthy campaign to keep the facility open.

Hull City Council's cabinet took the decision on Monday to shut Rokeby House care home on Rokeby Avenue, west Hull.

Councillors had previously decided not to fund flood repairs to the building and stop using it as a care home.

Residents and their families had fought a long campaign opposing the council's plans to shut the home.

One resident said she was very sad to find the home closing.

Hilda Milsom said she had nothing but praise for the facility.

""I've been there since a year last October.

"I've never been so happy in all my life. It's absolutely wonderful."

Councillor Carl Minns, leader of Hull City Council, said: "The sole purpose of the meeting was for the Cabinet to review the risk assessment process relating to the re-housing of residents to alternative accommodation. Cabinet members are satisfied that this has been carried out thoroughly."

Before making their decision to close the home, councillors heard a lengthy list of questions about the process from residents' spokesperson.

These were answered by Councillor Stephen Baker, as the Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Health and Well-Being.

Mr Baker said: "I am fully aware of the concerns of the relatives and residents about the closure and everything will be done to ensure that their welfare is safeguarded in the future."
