The minister met people who have recently been made redundant

A government minister has visited Goole to hear how the East Yorkshire economy is coping with the recession.

In the past few months the area has seen more than 1,000 jobs go in caravan manufacturing and related industries.

Yorkshire and Humber regional minister Rose Winterton met council bosses to hear what measures have been put in place to help people survive the slump.

She said it was "a key priority" to hear first hand how the recession was affecting communities and businesses.

"I make sure that intelligence is fed back at regional and national levels and informs government policy," said Ms Winterton.

"We are determined to do what we can to help people, families and businesses through this global recession."

Regeneration work

East Riding council leader Stephen Parnaby said: "The council is delighted to have had this opportunity to meet the minister responsible for the region and to show her some of the ways in which we are supporting residents and businesses during the current economic climate."

The minister's visit included discussions about the support available for residents and businesses during the current economic downturn.

She was also there to find out how East Riding of Yorkshire Council and other agencies provide services in the area.

The Doncaster Central MP was shown how regeneration work to housing had improved parts of Goole.

Her visit comes just days after East Riding council gave the go-ahead for plans to expand the huge Capitol Park business campus on the outskirts of the town, creating thousands of jobs.
