Driver in city clamping stand-off

The driver stayed in his car overnight after the vehicle was clamped

A motorist in Hull has made an overnight stand against clampers who immobilised his car whilst he nipped into a shop.

Richard Lea, of Princes Avenue in the city, spent the night in his car outside a petrol station on the avenue.

He said the clampers would not tell him where they were taking his car and has refused to leave the vehicle.

The clamper has refused to be named and said there are warning signs. Police said it was a civil matter.

Clamped motorist Mr Lea said he would not give in to the clamper's demands.

He said: "I said to them 'So you're going to take my vehicle away to a place and you're not going to tell me where you're taking it?'

"I told them I was not going to allow them to take my vehicle."

He said the clamper told him the recovery truck was on the way and the police would be called.

He added: "I said, you'd better call the police now, because I'm going nowhere."

Humberside Police said they were aware of the situation, but had told the clamper they would not become involved as it was a civil matter and no criminal offence had been committed.
