The Tonbridge New Bank note, which was issued 189 years ago, went under the hammer at Spink in London as part of a bank notes of the world sale.
It was bought by collector Mike Sambrook from Essex who has more than 4,000 notes in his collection.
Two other notes issued from Margate fetched a total of 680 at the auction which also saw bank notes from Brazil, Borneo and the Congo sold.

It is in particularly good condition and I thought it was quite cheap for the price

Mr Sambrook said: "The Tonbridge note is a very rare note.
"In five years I have never seen one.
"It is in particularly good condition and I thought it was quite cheap for the price."
Barnaby Faull, from Spink, said "I think if you live in Tonbridge you are probably unaware there is a Tonbridge note or a Tonbridge bank even, so I think you have a sort of patriotism towards your county.
"It is money, it is interesting, it is a talking point and I think it would be a fun thing to have on your wall."
Local historian Pat Mortlock said the note was issued 25 days before the Tonbridge New Bank went bankrupt.
