An eyewitness account of the Battle of Trafalgar has been bought at auction for �4,000 by a council in Kent.
It was written by Robert Sands, a 17-year-old sailor who had lived in Rochester and Chatham and served in Lord Nelson's navy in 1805.
Medway Council said he was a "below decks" Boy Third Class seaman on board the HMS Temeraire.
The document was sold at Bonhams in London and will be made available for study in the council's archives.
The �4,000 sum included contributions from the North West Kent Family History Society and three anonymous donors.
Councillor Wes Hollands said: "Medway Council is delighted to be able to strengthen its rich maritime and naval heritage by adding this document to its collection."
