Eurostar petition at 11,000 names
Ebbsfleet International Station
Ebbsfleet International Station is due to open on 19 November
A petition opposing cuts to Eurostar services at Ashford, Kent, now has 11,000 signatures, campaigners say.

The town is set to lose some Paris services and all of the Brussels ones, when the new Ebbsfleet International station opens on 19 November.

Eurostar said Ebbsfleet was equally or more convenient for most passengers.

Ashford MP Damian Green, who will meet rail minister Tom Harris this week about the cuts, wants "balanced" services from both stations.

We have a commercial remit

He said: "There are many people throughout Kent, and certainly other counties like Sussex, who would find Ashford much more convenient than Ebbsfleet.

"The best Eurostar can do is offer a balanced set of services from Ashford and Ebbsfleet to both Parish and Brussels, and it's very regrettable they haven't accepted that argument yet."

Eurostar spokesman Simon Montague said: "We have done a great deal of detailed research."

He said two-thirds of current users of Ashford station would find Ebbsfleet was "equally as close, or closer, to where they live".

And he said: "Five-sixths of people who currently use Ashford station will continue to have direct services to the places they want to go - which are Paris, Paris Disneyland, Avignon, and the French alps.

"For the minority of people who want to travel between Ashford and Brussels, this is disappointing news, but we have a commercial remit.

"What we have to do is maximise our passenger numbers."
