Horsmonden library will remain open until the end of September

Campaigners also staged a rally through Horsmonden on Saturday in an attempt to draw attention to their plight.

Horsmonden library, which is situated within the village primary school, is one of 16 being targeted for closure by Kent County Council.

Hundreds of people have signed a petition to keep the library open.

The stack of books signified how many are borrowed by local residents.

An action group called SOUL [Save Our Unique Library] has been set up by local residents, who last week took the petition, with more than 400 signatures, to County Hall in Maidstone.

Kent County Council wants to replace the library with a mobile service, and has said in order to be sustainable the library needs to attract more visitors and lend more books.

The library has been in the village for about 28 years, but Horsmonden Parish Council has urged those not already members to join.

Campaigners have insisted that if the closure of the library goes ahead at the end of September, the village will suffer from loss of trade caused by the need to visit a public library elsewhere in the county.
