Wind farm propellers take to road

Propeller blades for a wind farm being built on Romney Marsh are to be transported across Kent by road.

Police warned there would be 78 abnormally long loads travelling between Chatham Dockyard and the marsh, on the Kent/East Sussex border.

Movements are due to take place over approximately 13 days, starting on Monday 2 June, but there will be no loads moved on Saturdays and Sundays.

The �50m Npower Renewables wind farm, at Walland Marsh, was approved in 2005.

Three together

A public inquiry was held from October 2004 until January 2005 due to widespread opposition from councils in Kent and East Sussex.

The propeller blades will be carried on 47m (154 ft) long vehicles, with up to three travelling together.

Police are warning drivers that the movement of each vehicle carrying the propeller blades will take between two and three hours.

They will travel along the A289, then join the M2 to junction 3, continue down Bluebell Hill and join the M20 to junction 10.

They will then travel along the A2070 and A259 to the Romney Marsh site.

Six Kent Police motorcyclists and one car will escort each movement, with vehicles leaving Chatham at 0500 BST and noon to avoid the busiest times on the roads.
