The North West of England escaped the worst of the heavy snowfall which hit large parts of the country.
The motorway network remained largely clear of snow and was regularly monitored throughout Tuesday by the Highways Agency.
About 51 schools in eastern parts of Greater Manchester were closed because of the cold snap, mainly in Oldham.
Only six schools closed in Lancashire compared to 37 on Monday. Some roads were closed because of lying snow.
The A635 Holmfirth Road between Greenfield and Holmfirth and A57 snake pass remained closed by Tuesday evening.
The A672 Ripponden Road between Denshaw and the M62 motorway at junction 22 was closed for most of the day, but re-opened before the evening rush hour.
On public transport, Virgin Trains ran reduced service between Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston.
