Internal dissent over budget plans
The first signs of disagreement within Leicester City Council's main party have appeared over plans for voluntary sector cuts.

A Liberal Democrat councillor says he cannot support budget proposals to take 2m from the voluntary sector, forcing some organisations to close.

Councillor Hisham Panchbhaya spoke out after a public meeting, which heard concerns from volunteers, employees and people who use the services.

He felt the plans need to change as they will hurt the most vulnerable.

Important help

The councillor represents the Spinney Hills ward, which includes the Highfields area.

He said: "We know the important work they are doing and each organisation we have heard from has a message to tell us.

"The voluntary sector is very important to Highfields, 45% of the cuts will affect Highfields and large number of the unemployed are in Highfields.

"So the funding changes will really affect these people."
