Officers praised for Morrell case
Adam Morrell
Adam was beaten, strangled and tortured
A police force is paying tribute to four officers who worked on a murder case described as "one of the most shocking ever seen in the county".

Leicestershire Constabulary said the officers' investigation into the death of teenager Adam Morrell was "truly outstanding."

The remains of 14-year-old Adam Morrell were found in different locations around Loughborough in November 2002.

Matthew Welch, 19, was found guilty of murder after a trial in December 2003.

'Horrific death'

The jury was told Adam's death had been "brutal and horrific".

Det Con Sue Jones, Det Con Kam Mistry, Pc Stewart Taggart and Philip Cotton from the Scientific Support Unit will all receive awards for their work on the investigation, including the support given to Adam's family.

They are among more than 20 members of the force being recognised at the ceremony on Monday.

Matthew Welsh's girlfriend Sarah Morris was found guilty of assaulting Adam, and Nathan Barnett, 27, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

The teenager died from head injuries and strangulation after being beaten and tortured for at least three hours, the jury at the murder trial was told.
