Councillor rejects 7m hole claim
Haymarket Theatre
Could Haymarket Theatre be sold?
The ruling group on Leicester City Council has dismissed a report that there is a 7m shortfall in funding for the city's cultural quarter.

A council report suggested the Haymarket Theatre be sold to help fund the 31m project.

But Liberal Democrat Councillor Gary Hunt said the problem had been resolved since the report was written.

He said the project - which has already been given planning approval - had seven different funding sources.

Help refused

Councillor Hunt, the council's city regeneration spokesman, said: "One of the things I've been doing is getting those funding streams organised."

The project is the focal point of regeneration plans for the St George's area, but has been under threat because of the council's desire to cut costs.

Last year the council sent out a public questionnaire asking where cuts should be made, with the cultural quarter among the options.

Leicestershire County Council has ruled out giving any help in funding the project.

The leader of the County Council, David Parsons, said the authority cannot afford to contribute without putting up council tax.

The report will be discussed by the city council's Finance, Resources and Equal Opportunities Scrutiny Committee on 28 April.
