Elderly bus service threatened
Hundreds of elderly people in Leicestershire and Rutland face being unable to get to day centres because of a shortage of drivers.

Voluntary and paid drivers who work for Age Concern provide a lifeline for isolated older people, particularly in rural areas.

Managers at the charity say they are facing a desperate shortage of drivers which could see some services end.

The buses are the only way many people can get to their day centres.

Adrian Wilkinson, transport manager said: "We're looking specifically for mature people who have possibly taken early retirement and have time on their hands in which to occupy that and put something back into the community.

"We would give training in emergency first aid and manual handling and obviously we are looking for someone who is capable of driving a 16-seater bus."
