The Lincolnshire-born astronaut Michael Foale is to open a new set of lifts at Leicester's National Space Centre.
The lifts in the Rocket Tower have been out of order since the attraction opened in November 2001.
Up until now visitors have had to climb three sets of stairs to view the rockets from the top.
Managers say it has taken so much time to get the lifts working because the original ones could not be repaired and a new set had to be installed.
