There will be a �1.35m investment at the Leics battlefield site

Leics County Council has been awarded lottery money to celebrate the 1485 battle, near Hinckley.

There will be a new education room to allow a "hands-on experience" at the Bosworth Battlefield Centre.

Peter Winkless, council chairman, said it will provide visitors with an "even more" enjoyable experience.

He added: "The funding will be used to uncover and provide access to real facts about the battle and expend on the wealth and artefacts and objects already on display."

The battle ushered in the Tudor dynasty

The money will be spent on replicas to show the weapons, armour and costume fittings of the period.

There will be an archaeological and geographical survey to determine the exact site of the battle with field walking, historic mapping and environmental studies over the coming years.

The idea is to pinpoint the exact location of the battle which changed the course of English history, as King Richard III was defeated by Henry Tudor.

Visitors currently have to settle for a field and are told what is likely to have happened on the site.

The last major investment in the site was for the 500th anniversary in 1985, and visitor numbers have dropped off since.

The site cafe, known as the Buttery and housed in a temporary cabin, was condemned on safety grounds.
