New lighting to tackle city crime
Street lighting is to be replaced in parts of Leicester in a bid to tackle crime and make people feel safe.

The city council will install white bulbs in traditional yellow street lamps in the city's crime hotspots around the Braunstone Gate area.

Police said the new lighting will improve CCTV images and also reduce the fear of crime.

The authority recently revamped street lighting in the Church Gate and Gravel Street areas.

Police and council officials will study crime data with a view to extend the scheme to other areas.

City police commander Ch Supt Ian Stripp said: "Crime, including violent crime, is being reduced.

"For me, reducing the fear of crime is as important as reducing the actual number of offences."
