Head teacher 'keen' to start work
design of new academy
The academy is not due to open until October 2007
The head teacher of Leicester's new city academy is already at work on the school's building site - even though it will not open for another 16 months.

Pat Dubas will be in charge of the 20m Samworth Enterprise Academy when it opens in October 2007.

But until her school office is ready, she will have to settle for a portable building on the site.

The new head teacher said she is determined to work close to the community she will serve.

"I think it is important to focus on the difference (this school) is going to make here - this community deserves this opportunity and this building," Mrs Dubas said.

Located on the Saffron Lane Estate, it is jointly sponsored by Church of England and local businessman David Samworth and was given the green light by the government in March.

The school has already been criticised for being outside the control of the local authority and not having to follow the national curriculum.

The academy will serve the Eyres Monsell and Saffron areas of the city. It will take pupils from age three to 16, including pupils from Southfields Infant and Newry Junior schools, who will transfer to the academy.
