A new crackdown on people parking on double-yellow lines has been introduced in Leicester.

The city council has taken on 30 new traffic wardens.

A total of 3,000 warning notices were put on cars in recent weeks to warn motorists they would not get away with parking illegally from now on.

The local authority was planning to take over responsibility for parking enforcement in Leicester from the police on Tuesday.

The warning campaign started on 11 December.

"People have been given fair warning about the changes. I'm certain they've taken that on board," said Nigel Clarke of Leicester City Council.

"I would advise them not to chance their arm in future, because 60 is a lot of money to pay."
