Village sees traffic speeds cut
Vehicle speeds in a Leicestershire village have fallen by up to 15 miles per hour due to new traffic calming measures, officials have said.

Leicestershire County Council completed a 230,000 speed reduction project in Queniborough in May.

It included gateway-style entrances, a narrower carriageway, a vehicle activated sign and lower speed limits.

The council said monitoring had shown village-wide reductions with benefits for safety and the environment.

'Exceptional' result

Residents had raised concerns at the effect on the village of fast moving traffic travelling between the A607 and the B6047 to the north-east of Leicester.

Other measures installed a zebra crossing, speed tables and speed cushions.

Monitoring at seven locations showed reductions at all sites ranging from four to 15mph.

Nicholas Rushton, deputy leader of the county council with responsibility for highways and transportation, said: "We are extremely pleased with the falls in speed that the traffic calming measures have produced - even modest reductions have been shown significantly to improve road safety.

"This project has cut vehicle speeds by up to 15 mph which is exceptional and demonstrates what can be achieved by a well-designed combination of signs, crossings and other measures."
