An investigation has started after a series of attacks on waterfowl at a park in Leicester.

A goose and a swan have both been speared by crossbow bolts in the past few weeks at Watermead Park, an RSPCA spokeswoman said.

The goose was so badly hurt that it died before vets could treat it, said the RSPCA's Sophie Wilkinson.

"Whoever's behind them is obviously aware of the pain and distress that they're causing," she said.

She added that the attacker could face a 20,000 fine or six months in jail if caught.

"They're very violent attacks, and you must know what you're doing to actually fire a crossbow bolt at the birds.

"You know that you're going to cause a huge amount of injury and possibly death."
