Man in court over hostel violence
A man who was arrested after a violent confrontation between police, council officials and migrant workers has appeared in court.

Alan Garrard, 29, of Holbeach, Lincs, was arrested after officials were pelted with stones and concrete as they tried to clear a house for demolition.

The building, which housed up to 70 workers, breached planning regulations.

On Tuesday at Spalding magistrates Mr Garrard denied a public order offence and obstructing a planning officer.

He was granted unconditional bail to appear before the same court on 22 March.

Mr Garrard, who describes himself as an "intermediary" who helps migrants find work in Lincolnshire, bought the building in April last year.

South Holland District Council said his changes to the property represented "the worst case of breaching planning rules" it had ever known.

The hostel - boasting Mediterranean-style architecture, a water garden and even a half-built swimming-pool - has since been largely demolished.
