Four areas of Lincolnshire have been selected for a trial which will see some street lights dimmed or switched off completely.
Councillors hope the move will save money and and energy, but also claim the move will not compromise safety.
Three areas of East Lindsey and one in Branston will carry out the trials after a consultation process.
Highways department spokesman Paul Coathup claimed dimming the lights will help reduce its carbon footprint.
"We are trying to make sure the roads are still safely and adequately lit so people do not have fear or crime," he said.
In Mablethorpe the lights would be dimmed between 1230 and 0530 in the morning along the A1104.
