Council fights pay phone closures

The council says the phone boxes are vital in rural areas

A Lincolnshire council has started a campaign to fight plans to remove public telephone boxes.

East Lindsey District Council wants BT to rethink its proposal to remove 72 pay phones in the area.

BT announced plans in April to remove a total of 308 telephone boxes in Lincolnshire because they were found to be unprofitable.

Residents' views are being sought by the council so it can submit a comprehensive consultation reply to BT.

Leader of East Lindsey District Council, Councillor Doreen Stephenson, said: "The erosion of simple services such as public telephone boxes in rural areas is a travesty.

"In some cases they provide an important link for visitors and residents in difficult or even emergency situations.

"While the economics may stack up, the lack of support to rural communities does not."
