1m to restore Grade II bandstand
Clapham Common bandstand
The band stand should be restored by early next year
Work to restore a Grade II listed cast-iron bandstand, which has been derelict for 20 years, is due to begin in the next few weeks.

More than 1m is being spent on the 19th Century creation on Clapham Common in south London.

Funding is being mainly provided by the English Heritage Lottery Fund along with Lambeth Council and local people.

The bandstand, thought to be the largest in London, was put on English Heritage's at risk register in July.

It is hoped that when work is complete early next year the attraction will be taken off the register.

Lottery funding

This type of bandstand fell out of favour in the 1960s and 70s when shell-shaped concrete designs took over.

And many others were dismantled or fell in to disrepair.

The lottery funding will provide 900,000, while Lambeth council has donated 300,000 and fundraising events have brought in more than 100,000.

The council says the bandstand could once again become the focal point for musical events on the common.
