Hundreds of properties affected by a power cut in the West End when an electricity substation flooded have had their power restored.

Up to 1,300 customers in the Strand, Aldwych and Kingsway were affected by the outage which began late on Sunday, said energy supplier EDF.

But around 1,100 have now had their power restored, leaving 200 properties without electricity.

EDF said power would be reconnected to these properties by Monday night.

Engineers have been working with the fire brigade and Thames Water to restore supplies.

An EDF spokesman said: "Most of the water has now been pumped out of the building and engineers have made good progress, re-routing power so that nearly 1100 customers have had power restored out of the original 1,300 affected."

A Thames Water spokesman said a five-inch diameter water main burst beneath Great Queen Street.

He said the pipe burst again shortly after it was repaired at 1000 GMT.

"Our loss adjustors are currently assessing the damage that has been caused and we will liaise with EDF Energy over compensation claims."
