London prepares for more snow

Rail operators say they are trying to keep the rails ice-free

Transport officials in London are gearing up for the possibility of more heavy snow early on Friday morning.

Transport for London (TfL) said they were putting in place "cold weather plans" to counter the snow expected to begin falling overnight.

These include drafting 35 gritters with snow ploughs onto the TfL road network and using heaters to stop signal points freezing on the rail network.

TfL said it aimed to have all buses, trains and Tube services running.

Engineering work on the Tube has been cancelled and rail tracks are being de-iced throughout the night.

"We are closely monitoring the weather forecasts and are putting in place our cold weather plans across the TfL network, including the Tube, bus and Red Route road networks," said a TfL spokesman.

Commuters and parents with children in school are advised to listen to local radio announcements in the morning for constant updates on closures and disruptions should the snow arrive as predicted.

Forecasters say there is a 60% chance of heavy snow across the south east beginning after 0300 GMT. Accumulations could reach 2-4in (5-10cm).

The city's transport network ground to a halt on Monday after experiencing the heaviest snowfall in nearly two decades.

The entire bus network was withdrawn amid safety concerns after more than 20 buses slid off the road on Sunday night. Many train services were also cancelled. Tube services were also heavily affected.
