Worboys admitted sexual activity with some customers

Fresh allegations against a London taxi driver found guilty of sexually assaulting female passengers in his cab are being investigated by police.

John Worboys was convicted of one rape, five sexual assaults, one attempted assault and 12 drugging charges at Croydon Crown Court on Friday.

The Metropolitan Police has confirmed at least 85 women have contacted a helpline set up to trace other victims.

Worboys, 51, who denied all offences, was cleared of two drugging charges.

Lengthy sentence

He carried out the offences, targeting 14 women in total, over a period of 18 months - between July 2007 and February 2008.

Worboys, from Rotherhithe, south-east London, persuaded his victims to drink champagne which he had spiked with sedatives after telling them a false story about winning the lottery.

He would show them a bag full of cash before offering them a drink to celebrate his "win" with him.

He had picked up his victims, who were all alone, in London's West End, over a period of 18 months.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said a "number of calls" have been received on the free dedicated helpline.

Officers fear Worboys could be behind hundreds of other sex crimes that have not been reported to police.

The Met spokesperson said the helpline remains open and that anyone who has been a victim of Worboys should contact the police and will be offered the appropriate support and counselling if needed.

Senior detectives said Worboys will be re-interviewed in prison over unsolved sex crimes linked to him once he is sentenced next month.

He will be sentenced on 21 April and is expected to receive a lengthy sentence.
