Former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair was paid £580,000 during his final eight months in office, it has been revealed.

He collected £1,726 per day during the latter period of his role as the head of the country's largest police force.

Sir Ian stepped down last December after he lost the support of Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

The figures have been revealed in the Metropolitan Police's draft statement of accounts for the past year.

Backdated bonuses

Sir Ian's remuneration was made up of his salary, overtime and compensation for loss of office. It may have also included some backdated bonuses.

On top of his payoff, Sir Ian, 56, now stands to collect a pension of £3.5m next February, worth at least £160,000 a year.

The settlement was agreed by Metropolitan Police Authority chief executive Catherine Crawford supported by Mr Johnson, Kit Malthouse and two other members.

Sir Ian was compensated for standing down before February 2010, when his five-year fixed-term contract was due to expire.

Asked about the size of his pay-off shortly before he stood down, Sir Ian said:

"That is one for the lawyers."
