Father jailed for killing partner

A jealous father who stabbed his ex-partner to death in a frenzied attack while their two children were in the house has been jailed for life.

Brian Taylor, 29, flew into a rage on learning Katie Summers, 24, had been to a nightclub and told friends he would kill her, Manchester Crown Court heard.

Miss Summers, 24, was attacked days later at her home in Farnworth, near Bolton, in October last year.

Taylor, who earlier admitted murder, must serve 17 years and six months.

The court heard how the couple had been involved in a violent and volatile on-off relationship for eight years and they were separated at the time of the incident.

Remarks ignored

But Taylor, of Chorley Old Road, Bolton, was consumed with jealousy when he heard Ms Summers had enjoyed a night out with a friend one weekend.

The following Monday he went to a friend's house and told him that Miss Summers, also known as Katie Boardman, was "doing his head in".

He said "I feel like killing her", and added "how long do you think I will get if I kill her?".

Two days later he told another friend he was going to break into his ex-lover's home and stab her, but the friend thought he was joking and ignored the remarks.

The next morning, on 9 October, he told his friend he was going to visit his mother but instead went to Miss Summers' home in Masefield Avenue and attacked her.

He did not harm his three-year-old son and two-year-old daughter, but afterwards he drove them to his mother's house and confessed he had just killed Miss Summers.

The court heard blood-stained clothing was found hidden under the stairs and two fingerprints belonging to Taylor were found in blood on the door handle of the lounge.

'Vicious attack'

Police arrested Taylor near Bolton Parish Church after the defendant, who had cuts to his hands, told a passer-by he had just killed his partner.

Senior investigating officer Andy Tattersall said: "Taylor stabbed Katie in a vicious attack brought on by a rage of jealousy.

"He had clearly thought about killing her and had been telling friends about it in the days leading up to her death.

"Unfortunately their children are now going to have to grow up without a mother or a father and Taylor only has himself to blame for that.

"Knowing he will be behind bars for a long time to come will hopefully bring some closure to Katie's family."
