A neurosurgeon suspended over claims he sent brain tissue abroad without patient consent sat on a panel set up after the Alder Hey organs scandal.
Professor Peter Warnke, 48, of Formby, was suspended from the Walton Centre for Neurosurgery in April.
He was told to stay away as experts looked into allegations brain tissue was sent to a private firm in Germany without patient consent.
Prof Warnke had previously served on the Post-Redfern Committee, it emerged.
The committee was set up at the University of Liverpool after hundreds of dead children's organs were found to have been retained at Alder Hey Hospital.
Dutch Professor Dick Van Velzen was found guilty of serious professional misconduct earlier this year.
A university spokeswoman confirmed the investigation was ongoing.
Pathologist Dr Marco Rossi, chairman of the Research Ethics Committee of South Sefton NHS Trust, raised concerns over Prof Warnke in 2001.
