Talks over mail office relocation

Liverpool MPs have met with Royal Mail bosses to talk about keeping a postal sorting office in the city.

Royal Mail has announced it intends to close Copperas Hill, the Liverpool sorting office, and transfer to Warrington, losing about 280 jobs.

Mail centres in Crewe, Bolton, Oldham, and Stockport are also to shut.

Louise Ellman, the Labour MP for Liverpool Riverside, has asked Royal Mail to honour its commitment to the city.

She said: "We want to retain the mail sorting office in Liverpool, the jobs are very important and the economic impact of those jobs is very important for the city.

"Copperas Hill isn't suitable but there are alternatives, and Royal Mail must honour their commitment to consider them properly."

Mrs Ellman met with Royal Mail officials and representatives from the Communication Workers Union (CWU) at the Copperas Hill site.

Peter Kilfoyle, Labour MP for Liverpool Walton, was will also at the meeting.

Under the proposals, a new regional distribution centre in Warrington and four new delivery offices will be built - three in Liverpool and one in Manchester.
