Roadworks 'damage passing trade'

The disruption is expected to last three to four weeks

Traders on a Liverpool street closed for roadworks say their businesses have been devastated since work began.

Stopgate Lane in Walton has been closed to traffic since gas replacement works began on Friday, restricting access to several local businesses.

A National Grid spokeswoman said the work was essential and that traders, police and the council were informed.

But business owners fear they are losing out on passing customers and have already reported a fall in trade.

The road is closed both ways between A580 East Lancashire Road and Long Lane.

The disruption is expected to last three to four weeks.

Anthony Hewitt, who runs a furniture store on Stopgate Lane, said things were so bad he sent his staff home on Friday.

He said: "Well we decided it was cheaper to turn the lights out, shut the shutters and send the staff home.

"The staff have gone home now until further notice. I've had to go and borrow the money to pay their wages tonight as we've taken nothing all day."
