Wind farm for canal dredge site

Plans to build a wind farm near the M56 in Cheshire have been unveiled.

Peel Energy wants to put up about 21 turbines, each standing about 125m (137 yds) high, between the Manchester Ship Canal and the M56 at Frodsham.

The site has been used as a deposit ground for the disposal of material dredged from the canal.

The company said the turbines would provide electricity to about 30,000 homes and it expected to submit its plans to the government in 2010.

'Environmental studies'

The proposals form part of Peel Energy's vision to develop the mouth of the River Mersey into a "renewables hub" and sits alongside plans to harness tidal power from the river.

Richard Dibley, Peel Energy's development manager, said: "We are still carrying out detailed technical and environmental studies on the grounds, but we believe it is a good place for a wind farm.

"If approved, this scheme would not only meet the needs of 30,000 homes, but will also meet more than a quarter of Cheshire's renewable energy target for 2020."

Public exhibitions will be held to give residents the opportunity to see photos of how the wind farm may look.
